Mutualist Blog: Free Market Anti-Capitalism

To dissolve, submerge, and cause to disappear the political or governmental system in the economic system by reducing, simplifying, decentralizing and suppressing, one after another, all the wheels of this great machine, which is called the Government or the State. --Proudhon, General Idea of the Revolution

The truth is, it's very, very hard not to abuse others when you have power over them. All these incidents of TSA workers abusing flight attendants during "routine screenings" is evidence of that. All of these new measures are contributing to this, since TSA workers are now given the lead-way to be even more authoritative.

I'll tell you this as well: I have a friend who is a computer expert. He told me that all of these procedures people go through at the airport are really just a form of security theatre and are doing nothing to make anyone safer. According to him, even the cameras you see on the ceilings of department stores aren't even of good enough quality to make out your face. It's all about giving people the illusion that big brother is watching so we'll stay in line.

I'm flying from Baltimore to Boston this weekend. I hope to god I'm not one of those "selected at random" to go through the scanners.

It's similar with the security cameras where I work. A security guard who watches the monitors told a friend of mine that almost none of the camera bubbles actually had a camera in them. Most of what bureaucratcies do is just going through the motions, so they can say they've "adopted a policy" and are "doing something." And of course, when the effectiveness of the measures and the hierarchy's control are at odds, guess which one wins out?

Well, I made it back to NH just fine. I didn't see anyone go through the scanners at the Baltimore airport, but I was pretty anxious whilst going through security.

On Friday I'm going to join a group of free staters in demonstrating outside the local airport in protest of these intrusive measures, perhaps share a few ideas with them as well.

Careful! According to the folks at The Nation, that makes you a right-wing dupe of the Koch brothers.
